Reading Wendell Berry Together
I hope you can join in the next Wendell Berry reading group session.
Today should be another Wisdom From the Agrarians. But I am holding that off for another week because there is something else I want to bring to your attention.
Next Saturday (8PM UK Time), I am scheduled to hold another Wendell Berry Reading Group (you can find the schedule that I released a few months ago here).
The essay we will be discussing is The Making of A Marginal Farm, which is in my opinion Wendell Berry’s most important essay and covers topics such as his autobiographical account; the importance of small farms; and the value of received agrarian wisdom — topics which have taken on a new relevance in light of the Labour government’s apparent war on small farmers.
Wendell Berry is the foremost agrarian writer of modern times and the greatest agrarian influence on my own writing. I believe he is certainly worth reading — and even more so worth discussing. The purpose of his writing is to inspire us to rethink and even change our ways of living and to incite us to act in a more convivial, sustainable, and wholesome manner with our neighbours and the rest of creation. It is my conviction that that discussing his ideas with others makes putting these ideas into practice easier.
I hope to see some of you at the next session Saturday 23rd November 8 PM UK time. The Zoom code for Paid Subscribers and Patrons can be found below. In the meantime, this essay I wrote earlier in the year may help convince you that despite the cost, Wendell Berry is worth reading.
Warmly,
Hadden
